MEGALOPOLIS TEASER: ADAM DRIVER HAS THE POWER TO ‘STOP TIME’ IN FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA’S EPIC SCI-FI DRAMA

The first official teaser of legendary Hollywood filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming epic science fiction drama Megalopolis has arrived, instantly sparking curiosity owing to its theme and aesthetics.

The new teaser of Megalopolis opens by showing an extreme close-up of Adam Driver's face in sepia tone. In the next shot, it reveals Driver is standing on the top-most floor of a tall tower. As the camera pans 90 degrees around him while he steps onto the roof through a window, the nearby city becomes visible, bathed in golden rays from the sky. Driver lifts one of his legs and leans forward while standing on the verge of the building, seemingly ready to fall. But as soon as he loses balance, he screams, "Time, stop!" and the world around pauses at his command, allowing him to regain stable footing. Once he snaps his fingers, normalcy is restored.

Megalopolis, which marks Coppola's return to the director's chair after a 13-year gap, is described as a "Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America".

"The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves," the official synopsis of the movie read, Variety reported.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Francis Ford Coppola first began writing Megalopolis in 1983, and the film, he said during a conversation with GQ, costs $120 million to make, which was funded in part by the sale of a significant portion of his wine empire.

Megalopolis has already been selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it will premiere on May 17, 2024.
