DERRY GIRLS CREATOR LISA MCGEE BEHIND NEW IRISH COMEDY-HORROR ON NETFLIX

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has been working on her next project, with her behind an upcoming comedy-thriller that's understood to have begun production.

The screenwriter, 43, is currently developing a new Netflix series titled 'How to Get to Heaven From Belfast', which promises to be a "dark, dangerous and hilarious odyssey" through Northern Ireland. It's set to feature are the Dry star Roisin Gallagher, Unforgotten's Sinead Keenan and A Thousand Blows' Caoilfhionn Dunne, portraying Saoirse, Robyn and Dara respectively. The three characters, who are childhood friends, now in their late thirties, find themselves drawn back together after the death of another friend from their youth.

Lisa expressed her excitement in a statement to Variety, saying: "I couldn't be more excited to start production on 'How To Get To Heaven From Belfast'." She added: "I've loved writing Saoirse, Robyn and Dara - three flawed, funny women who are about to embark on the most thrilling and terrifying adventure of their lives. A mystery full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing and make you laugh out loud. Let's go girls!"

Her previous creation, Derry Girls, followed a group of teenagers grappling with life in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. The show, which starred Nicola Coughlan, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn, scooped up two BAFTAs and an Emmy.

However, despite the acclaim, Bridgerton lead Nicola has seemingly dismissed the prospect of a fourth season of Derry Girls, with the actor, who played Clare Devlin, insisting she wouldn't want to "taint" the legacy of the past seasons. Speaking to the BBC, she stated: "[Derry Girls was] amazing and I think it was a real three and done and it was wrapped up in a perfect package."

Suggesting her reluctance to return to the popular Channel 4 show was for fear of affecting it, she added: "I wouldn't want to go back because I wouldn't want to taint it." However, despite her reservations about a Derry Girls return, Nicola is eager to work with her co-stars again. She said: "I would like to work with them again in another iteration."
