KALKI 2898 AD BOX OFFICE: NAG ASHWIN'S FILM BECOMES THIRD HIGHEST OPENING INDIAN FILM OF ALL TIME

Kalki 2898 AD is off to a roaring start. The film earned over Rs 1.9 billion worldwide on the first day of its release making it the biggest box office opener of 2024. The film's stupendous performance on the first day of its release has made industry analysts hopeful as the year has been lacklustre in terms of box office earnings of films so far.

The dystopian sci-fi film has Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone in the lead. It hit theatres worldwide on June 27.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, Kalki 2898 AD has made Rs 95 crore (over Rs 900 million) net in India on its first day.

The film was released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam and in India, the film collected the maximum money with its Telugu version.

Kalki 2898 AD ahead of Jawan

Kalki 2898 AD’s net collection is Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million) more than last year’s biggest hit Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, which made Rs 75 crore (Rs 700 million approx) on its opening day.

Jawan went on to do Rs 1,160 crore (Over Rs 10 Billion) worldwide and made Rs 640.25 crore (Rs 6.5 billion) in India.

Kalki 2898 AD is the third biggest Indian opener and has surpassed the collection of Yash-starrer KGF Chapter 2, which made Rs 159 crore (Rs 1.5 billion) on its opening day.

Kalki 2898 AD is behind SS Rajamouli’s films RRR and Baahubali 2 (which also featured Prabhas, the lead actor of Kalki 2898 AD). RRR, which eventually won an Oscar, made Rs 223 crore (Rs 2.2 billion approx) on its opening day. And Baahubali 2, which also starred Prabhas, made Rs 217 crore (over Rs 2 billion) on its first day.

Going by the opening numbers, Kalki 2898 AD is looking at a strong weekend ahead.

The Nag Ashwin film stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan and has cameos by Dulquer Salmaan, Vijay Deverakonda and SS Rajamouli among many others.

WION's review of Kalki 2898 AD

In her review, WION's Shomini Sen wrote, "Written by Nag Ashwin, the film has taken huge references from Dune, Star Wars, Mad Max: Fury Road, Blade Runner and even Marvel movies. It's a slow first half and an unnecessary subplot involving Disha Patani and Prabhas's forced romance and gallivanting around the complex."

Shomini gave "full marks to the filmmaker for mounting the film on such a huge scale. The VFX is stunning, at par with Hollywood films, even though they reek of familiarity in several instances. But can VFX alone save a film?" Read more here
